Stewards Host Toy Drive for Children at Ottawa Shelters

The holiday spirit is in full-force in Ottawa where 1006A stewards and staff came together for their annual toy drive for children at Ottawa-area shelters.

"I keep doing it because every year the shelters are full of kids with no home and little chance of a normal Christmas,” said Caroline Brisebois, a 1006A steward who has organized the toy drive for the last 10 years. Brisebois is also a vice-president on the 1006A Executive Board.

“Nobody wants to be in a shelter during the holiday season and we just wanted to do what we can to bring a bit of cheer during this difficult time,” she said.

In addition to the local union support, many stewards also purchased toys to donate.

“Through their generosity and compassion, our stewards and staff in Ottawa are showing what the holiday spirit is all about,” said President Wayne Hanley.

The toys were handed out at Sonny’s Bar and Grill, which hosted a meal with Santa for local children. Leftover toys will go back to the shelter.

"I hope this toy drive lasts as long as there are kids in need at Christmas,” said Brisebois.
