Even the rain couldn’t keep Local 1000A riders from the third annual Ride for a Cure event.

Despite rain showers throughout the day, nearly 23 bikers and passengers took to the winding backroads of Southern Ontario to do their part to help fund a cure for Leukemia and Lymphoma on Saturday August 11.

Thanks to the efforts of the riders, passengers and volunteers, $12,000 was raised in pledges for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. The ride was jointly hosted by Local 1000A and Local 175 & 633.

“On behalf of Local 1000A, I want to thank the riders, passengers and volunteers for joining us at the Ride for a Cure this year,” said Pearl Sawyer, President of Local 1000A. “Your generosity and support is deeply appreciated and will go a long way towards helping to find a cure for Leukemia & Lymphoma.”

Some bikers who collected donations were unable to attend the ride due to the weather conditions.
“We thank those who sent in their donations for their support and we look forward to seeing them next year.”

Hugh Lee, a Local 1000A member from a Toronto Loblaws store, was a first-time Ride for a Cure participant.

“To get to ride with my fellow riders was a thrill,” said Lee. “It is a great cause and we had a good time.”

For Local 1000A member Nick Sioukas, it was his third Ride for a Cure.

“I had so much fun the last two times that even a bit of rain couldn’t stop me,” he said. “I love riding and the camaraderie you find at the event.”

Steve Robinson, a Local 1000A member from a Mississauga Loblaw Great Food store, has attended the Ride for the last three years.

“It’s a good cause and I love to ride.”

Diana O’Brien, who helped coordinate Local 1000A’s participation in the ride, said she was amazed with the turnout considering the weather conditions.

“Spirits were so high even when we were riding through the rain and that’s because we were riding for such a worthy cause,” O’Brien said. John DiNardo coordinated the ride for Local 175 & 633.
