pride4UFCW Canada Local 1000A is proud to announce it has been named Local Union of the Year by the UFCW Minority Coalition for its work with many diverse communities.

“With more than 1,000 Locals in the UFCW International Union, our Sisters and Brothers at Local 1000A should be very proud of their efforts for receiving this very special acknowledgement,” says UFCW Canada National President Wayne Hanley. “This recognition says a great deal about Local 1000A’s outstanding leadership and activism, and their high level of commitment to creating the most dynamic, innovative and inclusive Local Union possible.

“On behalf of a quarter of a million UFCW Canada members across the country, we congratulate President Pearl Sawyer and the entire Local 1000A family for this outstanding achievement,” Hanley said.

The award will be presented at the UFCW Minority Coalition’s 14th Annual Ball in Washington this fall.

“On behalf of Local 1000A leadership, staff and members, I would like to thank the UFCW Minority Coalition for this tremendous honour,” said Local 1000A President Pearl Sawyer. “We are proud to be part of the struggle to build a fairer and more inclusive society not only because it is important but because it is the right thing to do.”

Sawyer also commended the work of Local 1000A’s CAN (Community Action Network) in building stronger ties within the broader community. Chaired by Secretary Treasurer Tony Soares, CAN is instrumental in fundraising in the fight against sickle cell anemia with initiatives like Bowl for a Cure, various raffles and the CAN BBQ picnics in London, Ottawa and Toronto. This year, Local 1000A also started the first Pride Advisory Group in UFCW and officially led a delegation at the Ottawa and Toronto parades.

“I cannot thank our members enough for their support of the union’s many initiatives –your dedication has made our union, and our community stronger,” said Sawyer, who will be receiving the award on behalf of the union’s leadership, staff and members.
