TORONTO – After more than five months of on-and-off negotiations, a new five-year labour agreement between UFCW Canada Local 1000A and Loblaw Companies Ltd. has been ratified by 56 per cent, the union announced today. Voting by the union’s membership on the tentative settlement reached last Saturday took place over the last four days at several locations throughout the province and wrapped up last night. The settlement had been recommended by the union’s bargaining committee.

The renewal agreement covers some 15,000 Ontario grocery store workers at Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstores and Great Food stores. Key elements of the new contract include wage increases for all groups over the life of the agreement; vacation and health care benefit entitlement improvements for part- time workers in the Real Canadian Superstores and Great Food banners; and a range of economic protection options for both full-time and part-time Loblaws conventional store workers in the event their store is converted to the relatively new Great Food banner.

“This is a good agreement for our members,” said Kevin Corporon, President of UFCW Canada Local 1000A. “Among other gains, it protects the economic security of those workers who have made this company the undisputed marketplace leader in Canada.”
