Pearl_and_Marisol_WebCongratulations to Local 1000A Marisol Cartagena for being chosen as the winner of an iPad for referring members to apply for UFCW Canada's BDM scholarships.

Winning the iPad was the result of a special referral contest, administered by UFCW Canada, to create awareness of its long-time BDM Scholarship program.

Cartagena, who works as a part-time Health and Beauty Clerk at a Toronto Loblaws Real Canadian Superstore, encouraged many members to apply for the annual scholarship. She has won the BDM scholarship and the local union's scholarship in previous years.

"I am grateful and thankful to my union for continuing to help post-secondary students at a time when tuition costs are skyrocketing," said Cartagena, who is in her third year of a Child Development Program. "Thank you for having our backs during a time when many students across this province are struggling. Every dime counts and scholarship programs like these are incredibly helpful in helping cover the many costs that come up, from tuition to transportation to books."

Since being hired at the Superstore three to four years ago, Marisol's involvement with her union has deepened. She now helps organize orientation sessions for the union at her store, and has also participated in Phase 1 of UFCW Canada's Youth Internship Program.

"The union scholarship programs really made a difference for me and I wanted to do what I could to help other students by making them aware of this opportunity."

Local 1000A Pearl Sawyer presented the iPad to Cartagena.

“On behalf of Local 1000A, I am pleased to congratulate Marisol on winning the iPad and thank her for hard work and dedication in raising awareness about our union’s scholarship initiatives," Sawyer said. "With the staggering costs of post-secondary education, getting the word out to her co-workers ensures they too have the opportunity to apply and gain financial assistance through these scholarships."

Cartagena will continue to encourage students to apply for the scholarship, emphasizing that it is a simple process.

As for her advice to young workers, Marisol says:

"The more you know, the more you can help yourself and others."
