Local 1000A and UFCW Canada Local 206 merged on May 1, 2016 to form UFCW Canada Local 1006A.

ScholarshipYour union is proud to announce the recipients of the 2015 UFCW Canada Local 1000A Scholarships. Forty-two scholarships, worth $500 each, will be awarded to members and/or their dependents enrolled in post-secondary education based on their scholarship application.

“I was ecstatic when I found out I had won the scholarship,” said Traleena Rouleau, who works at Jack & Faith Bird’s No Frills in Arnprior. “It is not always easy to balance a job and post-secondary education and I appreciate the union's support and recognition of student employees. I will be putting this money towards my second semester costs, specifically my textbooks, as well as my summer courses.”

Pearl Sawyer, President of Local 1000A, commended recipients on their achievements.

“On behalf of Local 1000A, I want to congratulate our scholarship recipients on their tremendous achievement,” said Sawyer. “Thank you to all those, who took the time to apply, for sharing your thoughts and ideas with us through your scholarship and poster submissions.” Applicants, who were not chosen this time, are encouraged to apply for the 2016 scholarships (Deadline: September 30, 2016).

Sawyer said Local 1000A’s scholarship program is intended to help ease the financial burden for members and/or their dependents faced with the high costs of post-secondary education. Since its inception in 2003, the program has helped more than 500 students.

The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) reports that tuition and other fees in Ontario have increased by 248 per cent since 1993. Ontario currently has the highest tuition fees in the country, the centre reports, and those fees will climb to an estimated $9,500 in 2018-2019.

“All across Ontario, students and families are struggling to cope with the staggering costs of post-secondary education,” said Sawyer. “It’s simply unacceptable that Ontarians have seen tuition fees increase by 248 per cent since 1993. The dream of post-secondary education should not just be reserved for the wealthiest in our province, but should be one that is accessible to all families. Our scholarship program is about helping students and families achieve their goals in the face of escalating costs.”

For Elizabeth Zhu, who works at a Toronto Loblaws Great Food store, the scholarship will make a big difference.

"I was working multiple part-time jobs to cover the cost of living expenses and university tuition,” Zhu said. “This scholarship will help relieve some of the financial stress and allow me to focus on what's important, my studies. I am thrilled to receive this scholarship."

Randy Sabourin, who works at Agostino & Nancy Battaglia’s No Frills in Oshawa, said he is “extremely grateful to receive this scholarship.

“This scholarship will be really useful in buying books and required software for the upcoming semester,” said Sabourin, who is studying Business Administration-Accounting at Durham College.

Joy Camille Roasa, who is studying Biochemistry at the University of Waterloo, also received a scholarship. She is the child/dependent of Local 1000A member, Romeo Roasa who works at John Mazzawi’s No Frills in Milton.

"It feels absolutely amazing to be chosen for this scholarship,” said Roasa. “This award will help fund my education and this means a lot to me and my family. Thank you so much to the members of UFCW Canada Local 1000A!"
