Ontario's Union for fairness, equality and respect at work.

IMG_7386Local 1000A wants to thank the more than 180 activists who came out to the fifth annual Stewards’ Conference in Toronto from June 25 to 26. Your participation, enthusiasm and activism made the event one to remember.

Centered on the theme of ‘Organizing for Security,’ the conference was jammed packed with thought-provoking seminars, workshops and speeches and aimed to provide activists with a weekend of learning, training and rejuvenation.

child_gradWe are proud to congratulate the winners of Local 1000A’s 2010-2011 scholarships. Forty-two scholarships, worth $500 each, were awarded this year to members or children of members enrolled in post-secondary education. Candidates submitted a 500-word essay on the following topics: encouraging youth involvement in unions, Wal-Mart’s treatment of employees, or mobilizing young workers to organize unions in their workplaces.

child_gradEach year, 42 scholarships of $500 each are made available to ease the burden of increasingly costly postsecondary education. All Local 1000A members and their dependents are eligible for the scholarships. Successful recipients will receive $500 towards the cost of full-time undergraduate studies at a Canadian university, college or other postsecondary educational institution.

The 2010 successful recipients will be contacted by their full-time staff representatives to deliver the cheques and take a photograph, for Connections magazine.

See list of 2010 Recipients.

Being a good steward takes not only a passion to help fellow members but a willingness to learn. That is why Local 1000A is proud to congratulate 53 new stewards for completing the introductory Stewards Course this spring. Activists from a variety of workplaces (including Maple Grove, Green Grove Foods Corp, Loblaws, Great Food, Real Canadian Superstore, No Frills, and Janes Family Food Ltd), participated in the sessions in Toronto, Ottawa and London.

They learned about the local union, the labour movement and a steward’s duties. The courses were co-instructed by newly-trained instructors, Amanda Atwell, Leonna Turcotte, Fred Williams, and Glacier Samuel. Every year, Local 1000A offers courses in the spring and fall for interested
Stewards.
