maria-aguilarCongratulations to Maria Aguilar from the Real Canadian Superstore in Whitby! Maria takes home the September prize of $70 in PC gift cards for her winning entry in Local 1000A's Share Your Story contest!

Maria's Entry: "Working in two different companies, one under union and the other a non-union, has made me realize how essential having a union in a company is. I’m thankful for the countless times they took actions to protect my rights and to ensure that my voice and concerns be heard. There were many incidents that my union rep had to come to our store during midnights and wee hours of the morning to help us solve our issues with the management. My Union makes me feel protected and that others are by my side...a union that I would wish for the other company to have!"

c-medinaFormer Kretschmar packer Chit Medina is thankful for the difference the union has made in her life.

After four years at the meat processing company, Medina was left with excruciating pain in her shoulder, back, neck and lower back that left her unable to work.

Her job, which involved a lot of repetitive work and heavy lifting, had taken its toll.

“I couldn’t take it anymore,” she said.

Unlike workers at non-union workplaces, Medina did not have to seek justice on her own.

c-mcphadenCongratulations to Caitlyn McPhaden from the Real Canadian Superstore in Ajax! Caitlyn takes home the August prize of $70 in PC gift cards for her winning entry in Local 1000A's Share Your Story contest!

Caitlyn's Entry: "My union, UFCW Canada Local 1000A, has made a difference in my life, it has given me comfort and stability for the past four years while working at the Real Canadian Superstore. This year was a difficult time for my family and I as we lost both of my grandfathers less than 5 months apart. This challenging time was made easier by the bereavement time I was able to receive. The union ensured that I would not have to worry about losing a job that I rely on to pay for my schooling. The protection and job security the union has provided me has made the process easier and I could not be more thankful for the hard work they put in to ensure employees like myself are treated fairly and given the necessary time to grieve."

hailey-w-momMaria Loares remembers the frozen roads and the blackness that had enveloped many of the streets as she drove her three-year-old daughter to the hospital just past 3 a.m. through one of the worst ice storms in Toronto’s history.

“I can never forget that stormy freezing rain because that’s the day our lives changed,” she said.

The day before, her daughter, Hailey Delaney, had started getting mysterious bruises on her legs. At first, Maria thought maybe they came from her playing. That evening, Maria’s fears grew as Hailey got another bruise on her arm. Then, in the early hours of December 22, 2013, Hailey’s nose began to bleed and they could not get it to stop.

At the hospital, Hailey went through test after test. Later that day, she would be diagnosed with T-cell Leukemia (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia).

The event featured the voices of Local 1000A members and stewards as well as workshops led by Local 1000A’s Directors.

Union-YesUFCW Canada Local 1000A is once again the number one choice for LensCrafters associates seeking fairness in their workplace as a new group, this time from Pickering Town Centre, voted in favour of union representation.

“On behalf of everyone at Local 1000A, I want to congratulate LensCrafters workers at Pickering Town Centre for their courage, unity and determination in standing up to fight for a fairer future,” said Local 1000A President Pearl Sawyer. “When workers come together, they can make change happen.”
