GWU-webOn January 27, your local union executive and servicing staff met with the elected divisional officers from the local union’s Loblaws Great Food and Superstore Divisions to discuss and prepare for negotiations with Loblaws Supermarkets Ltd.

On January 28, the bargaining committee met to review the proposals and the bargaining process.

Negotiations are set to begin February 10 and 11 for bargaining unit members from Loblaws Great Food stores and Real Canadian Superstores.

Maryanne PiacenteLocal 1000A is pleased to congratulate the recipients of its 2014 scholarships. Forty-two scholarships, worth $700 each (up from $500 in celebration of our 70th anniversary), were awarded to members or children of members enrolled in post-secondary education based on a essay contest or creative submission.

Following careful consideration and deliberation, UFCW Canada Local 1000A’s Executive Board is proposing changes to the make-up of the Executive Board to be more inclusive and provide fairer  representation of our local union’s membership. Under the leadership of President Pearl Sawyer, the board undertook an extensive evaluation of Local 1000A’s changing membership makeup, trade sector composition and bargaining unit locations.

BDM-Scholarship-WebCongratulations to Gurneet Chauhan for winning UFCW Canada’s BDM Scholarship.

Worth $1,000, the scholarship is open to active members, their spouse or children enrolled in full-time studies at a Canadian post-secondary institution.

shoe-memorialUFCW Canada Local 1000A members and staff collected more than 250 pairs of women’s shoes for a memorial tribute in rememberance of all the women who have lost their lives to violence. The tribute, which was displayed at UFCW Canada’s national headquarters, was held to raise awareness about violence against women.

“Thank you to everyone who participated in this memorial tribute—with your support, we are helping to raise awareness about the ongoing tragedy of violence against women in our society,” said Diana O’Brien, coordinator of Local 1000A’s WIN committee. “It was incredibly moving to see so many members step forward to help and to take part in the tribute. I look forward to a day where there is an end to violence against women.”
