nofrills_bargaining_committeeMembers of the Local 1000A No Frills Bargaining Committee met on May 25, 2011 to discuss and vote on proposals to take into negotiations, which will kick off June 21, 2011.

The committee is made of Local 1000A members from No Frill and Valu-Mart stores across Ontario, along with Local 1000A staff members. Executive Vice-President Kevin Benn will be chairing the union’s negotiations team.

The Local 1000A activist was among the nearly 10,000 workers who took part in the Hamilton Day of Action: People versus U.S. Steel on January 29, 2011.

IMG_6571Local 1000A members across Ontario flocked to Wild Water Kingdom on June 18, 2011 for the union’s annual Members’ Day. Many brought friends and family along and took in a variety of attractions, from towering waterslides to the massive wave pool.


Loblaws_BannerLoblaw Companies Ltd has announced it will convert 10 Loblaws stores in Ottawa, Kingston and Lindsay to the Great Food banner.

These are the first conversions announced this year since the company unveiled its plan at negotiations last year to convert all Loblaws stores.

leukemia_gala_sign_2011UFCW Canada members, family and friends have raised more than $2,028,264 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada in the last 12 months. The achievement was announced on June 10 at the 22nd Annual Leukemia Gala, which drew hundreds of activists from across the country.

Held in London, Ottawa and Toronto, the Community Action Network (CAN) BBQ picnics feature an all-you-can-eat BBQ and a variety of events for youth and adults. These include relay races, soccer, sumo-suit wrestling, face-painting and a jumping castle. Participants can also compete in an “Iron Chef” contest by bringing their own cultural dishes.
