Since the onset of the pandemic, UFCW Canada Local 1006A advocated for the members, asking that employers to do the right thing and pay a pandemic premium for the duration of the COVID-19 crisis. The union is disappointed by the decision of employers in various sectors to discontinue the pandemic premium pay.

“Our members stepped up during the height of the pandemic to ensure Ontario’s families were served and fed, and companies benefited from the workers’ dedication and courage,” said President Wayne Hanley. “The reality is the pandemic still exists and our members are at risk of contracting COVID-19. We are disappointed by the employers’ decisions to discontinue the pandemic premium pay.”

However, through language in collective agreements and the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA), UFCW Canada Local 1006A will continue to ensure the health and safety of our members are protected. Since the COVID-19 crisis began, we worked to achieve enhanced protections for our members. The union will continue to meet with employers to further advance health and safety protocols across the province.

“We hope all Canadians realize the incredible and vital role our members continue to play to help our communities through this pandemic,” said President Hanley. “Their contributions and hard work should be recognized and compensated.”

UFCW Canada Local 1006A represents 35,000 workers in a variety of industries, including grocery retail, food processing, warehousing, transport, hospitality and service.

""I was working 40 hours and even though I was hired full-time, I was getting paid at a part-time rate. My Union Rep raised the issue with my new owner and helped make sure I got paid correctly for the hours I had worked."  –  Mark Zanin, No Frills.
