Union members, staff and executive joined in taking a stand against bullying, discrimination, homophobia and transphobia in our schools, workplaces and communities by participating.

Union-YesWorkers at Canada Catering showed solidarity and strength as they came together to vote for union representation with UFCW Canada Local 1000A. The vote took place April 5, 2016.

“Making your workplace better begins with union representation and I am proud to congratulate the workers at Canada Catering for coming together to take this important first step for their future,” said Pearl Sawyer, Local 1000A President. “We look forward to working with our newest members to improve their workplace and livelihood.”

pearl3I am pleased to announce UFCW Canada Local 1000A members have voted 87 per cent in favour of a historic merger with UFCW Canada Local 206, leading to the creation of our new local union, UFCW Canada Local 1006A.

The membership also voted 85 per cent in favour of local union bylaw amendments, which expanded the executive board.

The votes took place at membership meetings from March 29 to April 6, 2016 in 29 cities across Ontario and were open to all Local 1000A members. Members had the opportunity to hear a presentation, participate and vote at these meetings.

Following final approval by the International Union, the membership’s approval of the agreement creates a new UFCW Canada local union effective May 1, 2016.

This historic merger is a win-win for the memberships of our two great local unions.

A merger brings additional strength, stability and resources and support when we take on employers at the bargaining table or advocate on issues of importance to our members.

no-frills-negotiationsNegotiations for your next No Frills contract began on March 30, 2016 as your union negotiating committee and the company exchanged contract proposals.

Your bargaining committee is led by Local 1000A Executive Director Paul Docherty, with support from Regional Directors Don Taylor (Central Ontario), Roland Lapins (Eastern Ontario), servicing staff and rank-and-file members who work part-time and full-time at different No Frills stores across Ontario.

Your bargaining committee had met earlier on March 8 and 29, 2016 to review the proposals and the bargaining process.

patricia-obrien-negotiating-committeeUFCW Canada Local 1000A members working at the Best Western Plus ‎Mariposa Inn & Conference Centre, in Orillia, ratified a new three-year agreement with improvements to wages, and contract language.

“We are very proud of this new collective agreement which includes substantial gains for all members in our bargaining unit,” said Don Taylor, Regional Director (Central Ontario) who led negotiations for the local union.

maplegrove-loblaws-drivers-transportTransport drivers at National Grocers Maple Grove Distribution Centre recently ratified a new contract with signing bonuses, wage increases, and improved language.

“Our bargaining committee did an excellent job through a tough set of negotiations to get to the deal that was ratified,” said Bill Vantol, UFCW Canada Local 1000A Staff Representative.

Negotiations were led by Vantol, with support from Regional Director (Western Ontario) Brian Reid, and members Roger Siroky, Darrell Swanson, Trevor Enos, Dave Moore, and Doug MacEachern.
