373795_10151010971944597_1453152196_nLocal 1000A was among the million-plus revelers who took to downtown Toronto on August 4, 2012 to celebrate the city’s annual Caribbean Carnival.

Billed as the largest cultural festival of its kind in North America, the carnival is a three-week long extravaganza that features the glittering costumes, sounds and tastes of the Caribbean.

“Our country’s rich diversity is one of our greatest strengths and at Local 1000A, we are happy and proud to support initiatives, like the Toronto Caribbean Carnival, that celebrate multiculturalism and bring people and communities together,” said Pearl Sawyer, Local 1000A President.

Mike Derrick, a staff representative with Local 1000A, was also among the marchers on the parade route.

“Caribana was beautiful this year and went without a hitch,” said Mike, adding the event is getting better and better each year. “It was hot but everyone had a great time.”

Ray Ramkhelawan, a Local 1000A organizer, attends the carnival with his family and friends every year.

“I was proud to represent my heritage and Local 1000A at Caribana,” Ray said. “As usual, it was amazing to see people coming from all over the world to celebrate this festival and to see how much hard work, creativity and effort went into making this day possible.”

Throughout the day, masqueraders danced and marched along Lakeshore Blvd to the beats of Calypso, Soca, Reggae, Hip Hop and much more. Local 1000A marched with the Louis Saldenah Mas Camp, which it sponsors annually. This year, the Mas Camp made costumes in theme of ‘Fantasy in Jewels.’

Jonathan Lobo, Coordinator of Organizing for Local 1000A, said the day was an incredible one.

“It’s great to see our union celebrate its rich diversity,” said Jonathan, adding he encouraged members to come out and participate in next year’s Caribana.
