Local 1000A and UFCW Canada Local 206 merged on May 1, 2016 to form UFCW Canada Local 1006A.

rubyThanks to the efforts of Local 1000A, injured worker Ruby Burtch will receive a substantial settlement from WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board) in compensation payments.

Ruby was permanently injured after following the instructions of her supervisor, who asked her to lift large boxes of dishes by herself from the skid to the top rung of the display case at a Toronto Loblaws. The boxes were too heavy to be lifted by one person.

“Having the union by my side has made all the difference,” said Burtch, a Local 1000A member. “I am thankful to everyone involved in my case, it was a long wait but well worth it.”

Local 1000A President Pearl Sawyer said protecting the health and safety of the members is a critical priority for the local union. “We will fight as long as necessary to get justice for workers with a case.”
