Local 1000A and UFCW Canada Local 206 merged on May 1, 2016 to form UFCW Canada Local 1006A.

LEUKEMIA-LOGOLocal 1000A’s Southwestern Retail Franchise Division has a lot to celebrate after raising nearly $540 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada.

“I was overwhelmed by the money we raised,” said Kevin Bacon, President of the Southwestern Retail Franchise Division and a servicing staff representative with Local 1000A. “Thank you to our stewards and activists who agreed to sell tickets at their locations and a big thank you to our members for supporting this worthy cause.”

The division raised funds by raffling off two seasons’ passes to Canada’s Wonderland.

Members from several No Frills stores participated, including those in Hamilton Burlington, St. Catharines, Beamsville, Welland, Port Colburne, and Fort Erie.

The draw for the raffle took place at Mark’s No Frills in St. Catharines on May 17. The winning ticket belonged to Christina Castiglione from Peter’s No Frills in Hamilton.

“The raffle was something that was new and interesting and it caught the attention of a lot of people,” said Jimi Reyes, Secretary-Treasurer of the division.

With this raffle under their belt, division members are already thinking ahead.

“We are quite happy on how it went and hopefully we can make more on the next one,” said Frank O’Reilly, vice-president of the division.
