Local 1000A got into the full Halloween spirit as staff and members, along with their friends and family, dressed up to Bowl for a Cure for Sickle Cell Anemia on Sunday, November 3, 2013.

The event drew more than 100 participants of all ages from a variety of workplaces and raised more than $2200 to fund a cure for Sickle Cell Anemia.

“We had an amazing turnout- our biggest since this event began three years ago,” said Local 1000A Organizing Coordinator Jonathan Lobo. “Thank you to all those who participated, donated and supported Local 1000A’s efforts- you made this event possible.”

Lobo, who along with Local 1000A’s Ray Ramkhelawan organized the event, said it was about making a positive difference in the fight against Sickle Cell Anemia—a blood disorder that affects millions around the world.

“The money raised will go a long way in helping the lives of those stricken with this deadly disease,” Lobo said.

Local 1000A President Pearl Sawyer said members'  "support of this important fundraiser is critical to our continued success and helps Faces of Our Children bring joy to some of those afflicted with this devastating and painful disease."

All proceeds from the event will be donated to Faces of our Children, an organization aimed at raising funds, awareness and support in the fight against Sickle Cell Anemia.

Jessica Spooner, a steward and cashier, who works at Jim’s No Frills, dressed with her co-workers as members of the ‘Working Dead’ team. The team came dressed as zombies.

“It was something fun to do,” said Spooner, adding it’s good for the union to hold events like these as they encourage members to become more involved.

For Kretschmar packer Mark Teves, Bowl for a Cure was full of firsts.

“It was my first time bowling and my first time here—I really enjoyed it,” he said.

The award for Best Dressed went to the ‘We’ve Been Framed’ team of Mary-Joe Eaton, Mindy Kozak, Tim Kozak, Reuben Castro, Mandy Eaton-Almaria and Paulo Almari.  The team featured prisoners in prison jumpsuits and chains along with a police officer.

The 2013 Champions for highest team score was the team‘Buff My Balls of Candice Lowe, Travis Jones, Hazzam Zaki, Jonas Remulla, Patrick Remulla, and Bill Fowlie.

Thank you everyone for making 2013 Bowl for A Cure an event to remember!
