gnanaka-danFourth-year York University student and Local 1000A member Gnanaka Gnanadas is a recipient of the 2013 UFCW Canada’s Beggs-Dowling-Mathieu Scholarship, worth $1000.

“From when I started my first year to now, the tuition fees have gone up so it is very helpful for students because we don’t have a lot of money – we are trying to work part-time as well as study,” said Gnanadas, a part-time cashier who is also studying accounting. “I want to thank the union and encourage other people who don’t know about the scholarship to apply for it.”

Every year, UFCW Canada awards 18 Beggs-Dowling-Mathieu scholarships, worth $1,000 each, to members, their spouse or children enrolled in full-time studies at a Canadian university, college, or other recognized post-secondary institution.

“I can use the scholarship to pay my loans which will definitely be very helpful,” she said, adding that it is very important for the union to offer programs like this.

Dan Gilbert, Local 1000A Executive Vice-President, presented the check to Gnanadas.

“Congratulations to Gnanaka on her amazing achievement. On behalf of our great union, I wish her the very best for her future.”
