Ontario's Union for fairness, equality and respect at work.

UFCW 1006A is welcoming stewards from across Ontario to our fall Stewards’ Training courses at the union office.

“UFCW 1006A’s education and training program is life-changing for our stewards, empowering them with the skills and knowledge they need to help their co-workers and transform their workplaces,” said President Wayne Hanley. “I’m proud of our stewards for their participation, commitment and hard work on behalf of our membership.”

1006A is offering a variety of different courses for the 2025 fall session, which runs from October to November.

“Stewards’ Training is very important as it allows us to learn more about the role that we have volunteered to do,” said Hollie-Star LaPointe, a steward at the Real Canadian Superstore in London. “It allows us to meet other people, create new bonds, build confidence and learn new perspectives.”

Instructors include longtime stewards Lorrie Russell and Penny Patterson.

“I gained a greater understanding of our rights and the grievance process,” said Jennifer Patterson, a steward at the Swiss Chalet restaurant in Niagara Falls.

“Stewards’ Training has given me more confidence, and I’ve learned a lot about how to talk and listen to members and to always ask questions,” said Michelle Wilson, a steward at Frulact Canada in Kingston. “The courses also give us the opportunity to connect and learn from each other.”

“When I came into the training course, I did not know a whole lot, but when I left, I gained so much knowledge about being a union steward,” said Antonio Gidillini, a steward at Tony & Kathy’s No Frills in Windsor.

“Stewards play a vital role in the workplace,” said Savitre Ramsunahi, a steward at Aspect Retail Logistics. “I learned how to challenge unfair treatment in the workplace through Stewards’ Training. The courses teach us what to do in different situations to best help our members.”
