Ontario's Union for fairness, equality and respect at work.

UFCW Canada Local 1006A's Miller Transit Negotiations Committee

Over 300 workers working at Miller Transit have ratified their first union contract as UFCW members.

This first agreement includes big wins, such as a 39 hour per week guarantee for all full-time transit operators as well as 24 hours per year of paid sick time.

“I want to congratulate our members at Miller Transit on this strong first contract,” said President Wayne Hanley. “Their unwavering resolve for a fair contract demonstrates what workers can achieve standing in solidarity."

Negotiations were led by Executive Assistant to the President Frank Ragni, supported by Organizing Director Lesley Prince, Union Representatives Joe Blythe and Dustin Magee, and members Whitt Hazel, Carmelo Lamanna and Anna Ruiz.

"I’m very very pleased,” said Whitt Hazel, a Driver at Miller. "We’ve never had proper sick days, or guaranteed hours before. Overall, the whole negotiating team did an excellent job for members. We couldn’t ask for a better union."

Members at Miller work as drivers, cleaners and mechanics and provide bus services to York Region residents in Richmond Hill and Markham.

The term of the new agreement October 1, 2019 to October 1, 2023.

Local 1006A is the transit union in York Region, representing hundreds of workers at various third-party contractors serving York Region Transit.
