Ontario's Union for fairness, equality and respect at work.

Members at Laura’s YIG have ratified a new agreement with enhanced severance packages, worth up to $75,000, as their store sets to close.

Seventy-four members will be affected when Laura’s YIG closes in July 2022.

“Under difficult circumstances, the union’s focus in negotiations turned to negotiating a proper closure agreement with enhanced severance packages to protect our members who worked for years at this location, which ultimately was overwelmingly accepted by the membership,” said President Wayne Hanley.

Under the agreement, a severance package of up to $75,000 for eligible full-time workers was negotiated.

Eligible part-time employees are entitled to receive up to $15,000 severance.

"It's sad but the agreement is something fantastic to finish it out," said Gord Knowles, a member of the bargaining committee. The membership is very impressed with the local union's efforts – they see it and appreciate it."

The bargaining committee includes members, Gord Knowles and Taylor Howes and were led by Executive Assistant to the President, Paul Docherty with support from Union Rep Jackie Graticola.

Lump sums and wage increases were also negotiated.
