Local 1006A continues to grow in size and strength as 3,000 healthcare workers join our union. In a merger effective September 1, 2026, members of the National Organized Workers Union (NOWU) joined UFCW Canada Local 1006A.
“We are proud to welcome these members working in healthcare into the UFCW family,” said Local 1006A President Wayne Hanley. “These members have a strong history of union activism. Together we will continue to fight for what matters most to workers – the strength and stability of strong union contracts while providing outstanding representation, which puts our members first.”
Our new Healthcare Sector is comprised of members working across fourteen union contracts. Members work at a variety of sites, including Princess Margaret Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, Humber River Health, and retirement homes and food service locations throughout the GTA.
Bringing workers together to build member power is what unions are all about. This merger strengthens our Local and it's members as we gain additional negotiating power, stability, resources, and support when we take on employers at the negotiations table or advocate on issues of importance to our members.
Over the coming weeks, we will continue the necessary work to transition and welcome our healthcare members to Local 1006A.
UFCW Canada Local 1006A is now 46,000 members strong and is one of the largest private sector Local Unions in Ontario representing members in a wide range of sectors across the province, including Grocery Retail, Food Processing, Restaurants, Hotels, Security, Healthcare, Retail Commerce, Laundry, Warehousing, Transit, and Cannabis.
