UFCW 1006A delegates at the UFCW Canadian Council Convention

Local 1006A delegates were proud to participate in the UFCW Canada's 13th National Council Convention in Toronto.

The convention took place from August 23 to 25 and featured a variety of speakers, including NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, CLC President Bea Bruske, UFCW Canada Resident Elder Eric Flett, and best-selling author Irshad Manji. UFCW Canada President Paul Meinema and UFCW International President Marc Perrone also addressed delegates.

During the convention, 1006A President Wayne Hanley was nominated by delegates to serve as a UFCW International Vice-President.

“I am honoured to serve the members of UFCW. Together, our great union will continue our work to improve the lives of members and all workers across turtle island."

The conference was well-received by delegates.

“It is really very enlightening and amazing with all the guests and speakers we had,” said Jamie Jesalva, a UFCW 1006A delegate and member of the local union Executive Board. “You learn a lot and it was a great experience."

Delegates voted on resolutions on a number of topics including: gender-based violence in the workplace, equity and human rights advocacy, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, paid sick days, enhancing union education, workers’ compensation and health and safety advocacy.

“The conference was very informative, exciting and moving,” said Natasha Grey, a UFCW 1006A delegate and member of the local union Executive Board. “It was inspiring and an amazing gathering.”
